Independent films are getting a little extra love these days thanks to the recent success of indie Anora at the 2025 Academy Awards. The film took home six Oscars, including Best Picture.

If Anora’s big win inspired you to seek out more films made outside of the traditional large studio system, we’ve got you covered with this list of seven indie movies you can stream right now.

To showcase the wide variety of independent features out there, our list includes a diverse mix of genres, from experimental sci-fi to a dark comedy murder mystery. Let’s dive in!

But I’m a Cheerleader (1999) | Satirical Rom-Com

This coming-of-age romantic comedy follows a young cheerleader named Megan as she navigates sexuality, community, and love at a misguided (in a funny way) conversion camp. With its bold satire, high-energy storytelling, and campy aesthetic, the film is a beloved staple in LGBTQIA+ cinema. Plus, it features early-career performances from incredible actors like Natasha Lyonne, Clea DuVall, and Michelle Williams

Camp (2003) | Musical

This cult classic is a favorite of theatre kids everywhere. Set in a fiercely competitive summer drama camp, the film captures the highs, lows, and dramatic chaos of young performers chasing the spotlight. It’s chock full of references to iconic plays and musicals, and features a standout performance from a young Anna Kendrick

Glass Casa (2024) | Comedy Whodunit

In this sharp and hilarious dark comedy film, a bride-to-be finds herself in the middle of a real-life murder mystery when her bachelorette party takes a deadly turn. With its unexpected plot twists and ensemble cast of eccentric characters, Glass Casa is perfect for when you’re craving a modern take on classic comedy whodunit like Clue

Ingrid Goes West (2017) | Dark Comedy

In this darkly comedic and often cringe-inducing film, a young woman in the midst of a mental health crisis goes to disturbing extremes to emulate her favorite social media influencer. This dark comedy film has some thought-provoking takes on loneliness and authenticity in the age of social media, and Aubrey Plaza, Elizabeth Olsen, and O’Shea Jackson Jr. deliver engaging, charismatic performances.

Moon (2009) | Sci-Fi

It’s best to go into this sci-fi treasure knowing as little as possible. It stars Sam Rockwell as Sam, an astronaut stationed on the moon. A must-watch for fans of cerebral sci-fi and unexpected plot twists.

Moonlight (2016) | Drama

This beautifully shot gem of a film won the 2017 Oscar for Best Picture. It follows Chiron, a young Black man growing up in Miami, and unfolds in three parts: childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. In each part, we see Chiron portrayed by a different actor as his identity and sense of self evolve. With stunning performances, a powerful script, and incredible cinematography, Moonlight tells a vital and sometimes challenging story.

The Farewell (2019) | Family Dramedy

Based on a true story, this film follows a young Chinese-American woman (played by Awkwafina) who travels to China to visit her family after her beloved grandmother is diagnosed with a terminal illness. In keeping with cultural tradition, her family decides to keep the diagnoses from the grandmother, leading to a unique story that mixes lighthearted hijinks with genuinely touching moments.

Thank you for supporting independent filmmakers, and we hope you find your new favorite indie film on our list! Independent cinema continues to thrive because of viewers like you who seek stories created outside of the traditional system.
