What’s more fun than a specifically themed and meticulously planned movie night with friends? A specifically themed and meticulously planned comedy murder mystery movie night with friends!
In honor of the Glass Casa movie’s release to streaming services last month, we’ve put together a guide to prepping your next dark comedy movie-watching party. Here are our tips for elevating your casual movie shindig into a night your crew will remember for years.
Pick the right movie
It all starts with choosing the right movie for your group.
Focus on choosing a movie that will support the vibes you’re going for. Read reviews, watch trailers, and tailor your pick to the crowd and the energy you want to create.
Not sure where to start? We’ve got a great list of some of the best comedy mystery movies to help you brainstorm. Movies like Glass Casa, with its ensemble cast and high laugh-to-scene ratio, are perfect for keeping the energy and intrigue up throughout the night.
Set the scene
You know that moment in the movie theatre when the lights go down and you feel totally immersed in the world of the film? You can capture a little bit of that movie theatre magic at home with thoughtful lighting choices. Use lamps, fairy lights, and even candles to create ambient lighting in your home theatre space.
Take a cue from Glass Casa and get creative with your ambient lighting.
Seating is also a key. Make sure every seat has a good angle on your screen–no craned necks or uncomfortable body angles–and bring in some pillows and blankets to help everyone stay comfy.
Each home is different, of course, but with some planning and creativity, you can utilize what you have to create a perfectly spooky environment for your screening.
Think through your snacks and drinks
Your guests will probably be grateful for any refreshments on offer, but why not make the night a bit more memorable by theming your goodies?
One way to approach this is by considering whether the characters eat or drink anything in the movie and using that as your starting point. For example, in Glass Casa, the characters drink Bloody Marias, and one character snacks on raw cookie dough– both fun to serve along with some other classic night-in fare.

Or if the film’s setting factors significantly, you can take your cue from that. For example, if the story is set in Maine, the menu might include lobster rolls, clam chowder, and blueberry pie.
If you’re not super familiar with the movie you picked, or if you’re just not finding food inspiration in it, no worries. You can still theme your snacks around the “dark comedy” concept. For example, you can call it a “black comedy” night and fill your snack table with black food–think dark chocolate-covered popcorn, black licorice, blackberries, charcoal lemonade, black bean dip, and nori.
Add a little intrigue with activities
Having a small planned activity can be a great way to welcome your guests as they arrive or to spark conversation during post-film discussions.
Again, look closely at your film for unique ideas. Lay out a puzzle inspired by the movie’s imagery, plan trivia questions, or create a photo backdrop with props and quotes from the film. Have a bigger crowd? Try offering a mix of activities—some quiet and introvert-friendly (like puzzles) and others more interactive (like trivia).
Hosting a Glass Casa movie night? Lean into the bachelorette party energy and have face masks available for your guests (extra points if they’re white mud masks like in the movie!).
Have an amazing night!
We hope you have a memorable movie night. Just remember that the most important hosting tip is to relax, enjoy your guests, and immerse yourself in a great film!
